Abner Leighton Haynie “Butch” age 76 passed away in the early morning of March 10, 2025, after a long hard-fought battle with cancer and heart disease. He was surrounded by his family and love in his final hours.
Butch was born and raised in South Baltimore with his seven siblings by their parents Ab and Marge. He graduated from Southwestern high school in 1966 where he was an accomplished athlete earning awards in a variety of sports such as football, basketball, baseball and volleyball. His love for sports would be a constant theme throughout his life.
1966 was also the year he married his wife of almost 59 years Helen Genevieve “Genny” (Cousins) and began his career at BGE Butch and Genny raised three boys together. They also became legal guardians of their niece and raised her alongside the boys. His early passion for sports shined more as his kids grew, and he began to assist with coaching their various teams. He was also known for showing up in his BGE bucket truck for practices and games so as not to miss a moment.
Another way sports where a central part of Butch’s life was by umpiring. He began umpiring for local little league games and advanced to district and national levels. His umpiring career culminated with his induction into the American Youth Baseball Hall of Fame in Cooperstown in 2004.
Traveling was another passion for Butch; while sports enabled him to spend time with his boys, traveling gave him time to slow down, enjoy life and spend quality time with the love of his life Genny. They were a true team; he worked tirelessly to provide for the family while she kept the home running. In his own words, he was “a part-time professional” photographer. He loved making memories and documenting all of their adventures and travels throughout the Caribbean, Europe, Hawaii, Alaska, and many many other places through photos.
Butch was an active member of the Colts Coral #29 back in the day so becoming a Ravens Roost member was natural. He found his home with Roost #18 where he made many friends and had many adventures.
Being a lineman at BGE for 44 years was something Butch was very proud of and he made many lifelong friendships that continued into retirement where he was instrumental in organizing a monthly luncheon with the guys.
Butch is survived by his wife of almost 59 years Genny their three sons Abner Leighton III (Jessica) Bryan Jason (Theresa) David Michael (Malissa) their daughter Betty Jean, his seven grandchildren, Annastasia Lynn, Bryan Jason Jr, Samantha, Lauren, Angelina Lauren, Branwyn Leigh, Katelyn Marie, Eryn Genevieve and great granddaughter Lennon Louise. His three sisters, Sue Eilerman, Judy Baines (Richard) and Mag Elliott (John), brother Donald (Doris) and sister-in-law Joanne Miller. As well as numerous nieces and nephews Butch is proceeded in death by his parents, Ab and Marge as well as his brothers, Kenny and Bruce and sister Pat.
