Charles Boxwell, Jr

Charles “Buck” Raymond Boxwell, Jr., a resident of Pasadena, MD passed away on April, 12, 2017.

He was born on October 11, 1930 at home on E. Clement St. in South Baltimore. He was the second born son of Charles Raymond Boxwell Sr. and Etta Marie (nee Blanchard). He graduated from Southern High School in February 1950 and the University of Maryland in College Park in 1955 with a degree in Physical Education & Health.

In high school Buck played football, lacrosse and wrestled. He was a member of The Sun’s 1949 All-Star Football Second Team and chosen unanimously to a first string berth on The Southern Courier All-Maryland team the same year. “He was selected because of his fine team spirit and continuous will to win. “Boxy” was a tower of strength in the Bulldog forward wall and a thorn in the side to all of our opponents”. In the same year he was the unanimous choice for the prestigious honor of the McCormick Unsung Hero and received the silver trophy emblematic of the utmost in unselfish team play from Mayor D’Alesandro and Charles P. McCormick.

Charles was a 1st Lt in the United States Air Force from 1955 - 1957, stationed in Okinawa, Japan. After his military service he accepted a teaching position at George Fox Junior High School where he met and later married Amy Ruth Hartley. He became an integral part of her established family of five children and was affectionately referred to as Mr. B. Charles worked at George Fox Junior High until he retired in 1988. He coached wrestling at George Fox Junior High and also coached wrestling, cross country and track and field at Northeast High School in Pasadena, MD. After retirement he enjoyed crabbing, baking and weekly breakfast with a group of fellow retired teachers (Old Cronies).

He is survived by three brothers, William R. Boxwell (Theresa) of Dameron, MD, Norman T. Boxwell (Barbara) of Millersville, MD and Edgar B. Boxwell (Caroline Mitchell-Boxwell) of Silver Spring, MD, 6 children Cecilia Weakley (Doug), Stephen Hartley (Lori), Jonathan Hartley (Wanda), Patricia Snodgrass (Don), Rebecca Ziegler and Apryll Steen and 12 grandchildren and two great-grandchildren. He is also survived by his devoted friend and companion, Kay Pulford of Glen Burnie, MD.

A visitation will be held on Tuesday, April 18, 2017 from 3-5 pm and 7-9 pm at McCully-Polyniak Funeral Home, P.A. 3204 Mountain Road Pasadena, MD. A service will be held on Wednesday, April 19, 2017 at 10:00 a.m. at McCully-Polyniak Funeral Home. The internment will follow at Maryland Veterans Cemetery in Crownsville.
