Charlie Mikelonis – “Our Hero”

Devoted and beloved husband of Cindy Mikelonis for almost 35 years- upcoming 35th anniversary on May 9, 2016. Loving and devoted father of Cristin Danielle and Ryan Thomas Mikelonis. Beloved son of the late Leonard and Gertrude Mikelonis of Parkville, MD. Dearest brother of Kathy Swagler and John Mikelonis. Beloved son-in-law of Irene Hajek and the late Joseph Hajek of Glen Burnie. Dearest brother-in-law of James Swagler, II, Lee Yoder, Claudia Mikelonis and Geraldine Weber. Survived by many nieces and nephews, Kara Swagler, Sheri Weber, Wayne Weber, Jr. Brian Weber, Erik Weber, Sr., Erik Weber, Jr., Katie and Karli Swagler. Dearest family and friends of Joann, Steve, Lindsey and Jeffrey Skerenchak.

Charlie graduated from Parkville High School in 1966. He attended Data Systems Institute for a year and a half. Charlie served in the United States Marine Corp. Fox 2/9 3rd Marine Division and survived the Vietnam War with an honorable discharge. He received a National Defense Service Campaign medal with device, Vietnam Service medal, Vietnam Campaign medal with device, Rifle Sharp shooter badge, combat action ribbon and good conduct medal. He was also in the process of receiving a Purple Heart.

He met his wife Cindy at the MVA in 1976 where she was employed at the time. Charlie started dating Cindy in 1979 and later engaged and married on May 9, 1981. They had a daughter Cristin in 1982 and a son Ryan in 1989.

Charlie was employed with the State of Maryland at the MVA in Glen Burnie for 35 years as a DP Supervisor of operations and retired in 2001.

Charlie loved life and laughter, adored his family and many many friends. He loved to joke around and make people laugh. He smiled so much he was nicknamed “Smiley” by his co-workers.

He touched so many hearts and lives with his kind caring ways. Everyone who got the chance to know “Chuck” loved him.

Charlie’s passion was music and entertaining others with his DJ talents. He was a DJ for over 20 years-AKA DJ Rocket.

Charlie loved to go fishing and crabbing with his son Ryan and enjoyed gardening and spending time with his dog Roxy who was his best friend.

He enjoyed playing cards and spending quality time with his family and friends. Charlie loved all kinds of sports especially baseball and football. He played baseball in Parkville and was on an All Star player and was considered for a major pro baseball team at that time.

Charlie was “Our Hero” and will be greatly missed and his memory will be cherished forever in the hearts of those who knew him.

Relatives and friends are invited to call at the family owned and operated MCCULLY-POLYNIAK FUNERAL HOME, P.A. 3204 Mountain Road PASADENA on Thursday, April 28, 2016 7:00 to 9:00 PM ONLY. A Memorial Mass will be celebrated in St. John the Evangelist Church Roman Catholic Church 689 Ritchie Highway Severna Park Maryland 21146 on Friday, May 6, 2016. Interment Crownsville Veterans Cemetery. In lieu of flowers contributions may be made to the Vietnam Veterans Memorial Fund 1235 South Clark Street, Suite 910 Arlington Virginia 22202.
