Eileen Hattum Smith, age 65, passed away unexpectedly on January 22 while vacationing in the Caribbean. A 38 year resident of Pasadena, she was born in Brooklyn, NY to the late Beverly and James Hattum. Eileen grew up in Mineola, NY where she married her husband of 42 years Joseph B. Smith. She is a graduate of the State University of New York at Geneseo.
Eileen was an elementary school teacher in New York before moving her growing family to Maryland. She poured her tremendous energy into nurturing the hearts and minds of children - her own and many others. From serving as a Cub Scout den mother and leader of the campfire girls to coaching soccer, volunteering at her children’s schools, founding Mt. Road Lacrosse, and organizing what is now the Mt. Carmel Child Development Center she still found time to maintain a household where all felt welcome and cared for.
Eileen and Joe enjoyed cruising, making trips to every corner of the world, summering at their camp in New Hampshire and spending time with their children and grandchildren.
A loving and deeply devoted wife and mother, she is survived by her husband Joseph; her daughter Rebecca Smith Beaudin; two sons Brian and William; brother James Hattum; two sisters Karen Handschin and Joanne Hattum; and two grandchildren Leo James and Greta Jean. She also leaves behind numerous loving relatives and friends.
A Memorial service will be held at Mount Carmel United Methodist Church at 4760 Mountain Road in Pasadena on Friday, January 31 at 3:00 pm. All who wish to honor Eileen’s life and legacy are welcome. Memorial contributions may be made to “Disabled American Veterans” or “The Humane Society of the United States.”
