Eugene Carney Ebel passed away on Monday,April 16, 2012 at the age of 76. He achieved early fame when, as a member of the first graduating class of Archbishop Carroll High School in Washington D.C., he kicked the winning field goal in the 1953 game against Gonzaga while wearing street shoes and a cast on his broken arm. The child of immigrants, he learned early the importance of family, hard work, loyalty, fairness, and good humor. His early years at Carroll and St. Gabriel's grade school left him with deeply cherished lifelong friends. After service in the U.S. Army, he began career as a successful Contractor until his retirement several years ago, when he passed the torch to his grandson, Gene McDowell. He is survived by his loving wife of 55 years, Jeanine (Mazzetti) Ebel. Together they built and raised a family of five daughters; Mary (Charles) Wilson, Cindy Quaster, Christine (Mike) Herishen, Susan (Chris) Loyd, and Teresa (Phil) Jacoby. Gene remains an important figure in the lives of their fourteen grandchildren and four great-grandchildren. Also surviving are his brothers Billy and Jimmy. He is preceded in death by his parents, William and Margaret, and his sisters, Peggy and Kathleen. There will be a viewing at the family owned and operated MCCULLY-POLYNIAK FUNERAL HOME, P.A. 3204 Mountain Road (PASADENA) on Thursday from 3PM - 5PM and 7PM - 9PMwith a funeral mass to be held at Our Lady of the Chesapeake on Friday at 10 AM. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Archbishop Carroll High School, "The Pioneer Class of 1955 Scholarship Fund."
