John Kitchner

October 14, 1943 — March 25, 2017

John Richard Kitchner (Sonny, Pop) passed away peacefully in his home in Pasadena, MD on March 25, 2017 at the age of 73.

John is survived by his daughters Tamara (Kyle) Barbour of Glen Burnie, MD and Kathryn (Tony) Mattare of Pasadena, MD; his grandchildren, Chloe, Madelynne, Aiden, Morgan, and Brody; his siblings, Margaret (Bill) Tudor, A. Thomas (Sharon) Kitchner, Michael Kitchner, Catherine (Richard) Maenner, and James (Debbie) Kitchner; and many nieces, nephews, and cousins. He is preceded in death by his parents, and his wife of 45 years, Mary Louise Nelson Kitchner.

John was born on October 14, 1943 in Baltimore, MD to Helen Ingersoll Kitchner and John Stephen Kitchner. He graduated from Southern High School in Baltimore City. John joined the United States Navy in October 1961, at the age of 17. After four years he was honorably discharged into the Naval Reserves and began working for the Bell Telephone Company. He met his future wife in 1968 and married a short time later in Illinois on February 15, 1969. He continued to work for the telephone company until his retirement in 2000. John enjoyed spending time with his friends and family (immediate and extended), sailing, fishing, Fox News, politics, learning about history, growing vegetables, his visits to the American Legion, Coffee Wednesdays, football, and most of all, his grandchildren.

Friends and family are invited to celebrate John’s life on Friday, March 31, 2017 at McCully-Polyniak Funeral Home, P.A.  in Pasadena, MD from 4 pm to 7 pm. There will be a small service at 6:30 pm, followed by a wake at the American Legion Post 34. In lieu of flowers, please send donations to the American Legion Post 34, 5526 Belle Grove Rd, Baltimore, MD 21225.
