Leonard J Barry, “Joe”, beloved husband of Margaret “Peggy” Barry, devoted father of Cheryl Ripple and her husband Danny, Diane Dunshee and her husband Rick, and Janet Franchy and her husband John, loving grandfather of Jenn, Logan, Bill, Dan, Matthew, Ben, Julia, loving great-grandfather of Jackson and Leo.
Joe was born May 24, 1941, in Annapolis Maryland to his parents Leonard Sr and Felicia. He grew up in Eastport and graduated from St Mary’s High School in 1959. Joe loved everything about the Chesapeake Bay, especially crabbing. While serving in the United States Air Force from 1959 – 1963, he met Peggy Gresh in Austin, Texas and they married in February 1964.
Joe and Peggy initially lived in Annapolis where they raised three daughters. Joe worked for the National Security Agency and served three tours in Germany from 1974 to 1977, 1981 to 1984, and 1987 to 1988. He retired from NSA in 1995 after 31 years of service. After retirement, Joe and Peggy moved to Deale and later to Pasadena in 2005.
Joe was an active member of his community. He served in the Eastport Volunteer Fire Company from 1965 – 1974, reaching the rank of Lieutenant. He was a member of the Knights of Columbus in Severna Park, Annapolis, and finally Pasadena. He was a founding member of the Coast Guard Flotilla 23-7 Herring Bay where he served as Flotilla Commander. Later, he was a member of Flotilla 22-1 Curtis Bay. As part of both Flotillas, he shared his boating passion and taught many Maryland Boating Safety courses in the community. An avid woodworker Joe was a founding member of the Chesapeake Woodturners, serving as President for several years.
Joe was preceded in death by his parents Leonard Barry Sr and Felicia Dishong, and his sister Elizabeth Wagner.
Relatives and friends are invited to visit at the family owned and operated MCCULLY POLYNIAK & COLLINS FUNERAL HOME, P.A. 3204 Mountain Road PASADENA on Friday, September 27, 2024, from 3 to 5 and 7 to 9 pm. A Funeral mass will be held in the Our Lady of the Chesapeake Church 8325 Ventnor Road PASADENA on Saturday, September 28, 2024, at 9:30 am. Interment Private.
