Michael Burnell Utz

Michael “Mud Dog” Burnell Utz, 66, of Pasadena, Maryland, passed away on August 20, 2024 at his home in the presence of his wife, Cheryl Swann Utz.

 

Michael was born on October 18, 1957 in Gettysburg, Pennsylvania. He graduated from Northeast High School in 1975 where he excelled in baseball. It was at Northeast that met his future wife, Cheryl. The two were married on September 11, 1982. Soon after he built their house in the Fairwood community of Pasadena where he and Cheryl raised their two children, Zachary and Emily.

 

Michael started a successful masonry business in 1980, Mike's Masonry, Inc., which he ran for over 40 years. His son Zachary began working with him as a teenager and continued to do so in a limited capacity up until only recently. He was a well-respected and beloved member of the Pasadena-area small business community. His Christmas parties were legendary and would bring together hundreds of colleagues and friends he had made over the decades. He will be missed by many.

 

Throughout his life, Michael was a passionate outdoorsman. One of his true joys was to spend weekends at his shore home on Hoopers Island, MD. He loved steaming crabs, fishing aboard his cherished boat “Mud Dog, hunting for sika deer, and spending quality time there with his family and friends. He cherished his time spent on Hoopers Island so much he even loved to mow the grass! He was also a huge Baltimore sports fan who loved the Ravens and the Orioles.

 

Michael was a devoted father, husband, brother, and son. His family was his whole world and he would do anything for them, they will miss him dearly. He is survived by his wife, Cheryl, his children, Zachary and Emily, his mother, Ruth, his brother, Doug, his in-laws, Nanette and Randy Dixon, his three nephews, T.J, Bradley, and Ryan, his niece, Malyssa, and his beloved grand-dog Fennel.
