Philip Atwater Patterson, 88, beloved husband of 63 years to Carol, passed away peacefully at his home in Pasadena, MD, on Sunday, Sept. 4, 2016. Born in Ralston, PA, he was the son of the late Margaret Vanessa Haischer, James Vernon Patterson and step-father Earl F. Haischer.
Phil served in the Army from 1954 to 1956, with basic training at Fort Dix, NJ and subsequently was stationed in Alaska. He attended Colgate University, transferring to Clarkson University where he completed a degree in mechanical engineering. He spent the majority of his career at Westinghouse Electric Company, retiring in 1991 after 35 years. He lived a full life and pursued passions outside of work with his family, including powerboating, RV camping and traveling. An avid sports fan, he followed the Baltimore Orioles, Ravens and the Terps. He played an active supporting role to his wife Carol as the librarian of the Annapolis Symphony Orchestra, maintaining the sometimes mysterious copier, mailing out music endlessly, designing and building a binding machine, and being a co-librarian extraordinaire. A master of many trades, he pursued interests that involved engines and power tools, and used these skills to build and repair cars, renovate his house and help family and friends with many projects over the years. He was known as “Mr. Fixit” to a young family friend, and loved nothing more than to help and guide someone who had a car problem or any mechanical project to complete.
Phil is lovingly remembered by his wife, Carol, his daughter Allison P. Cullen, son-in-law Michael G. Cullen, his sister Beverly A. Ovist, his nieces Margaret O. Woodside and Krista O. Scott and his cousin Judith I. Hymes.
The family will receive guests on Saturday, September 17, 2016 at the McCully-Polyniak Funeral Home, P.A. 3204 Mountain Rd. Pasadena, MD 21122 from 10:30-11:30 AM, at which time a memorial service will be held. If desired, contributions may be made to the Sidney Kimmel Comprehensive Cancer Center, PO Box 17029, Baltimore, MD 21297-1029 or to the Annapolis Symphony Orchestra, Maryland Hall for the Creative Arts, 801 Chase Street, Suite 204, Annapolis, MD 21401.
