ROYAL GRAHAM SHANNONHOUSE, III, Professor of Law
Royal Graham Shannonhouse III passed away on Friday July 23rd 2010 at his home in Baltimore, Maryland.
Mr. Shannonhouse was born in New Bern, North Carolina on May 18, 1929 to Royal Graham Shannonhouse, Jr and Mary Poe Shannonhouse.
His early life was spent in Pittsboro, N.C. He was a Graduate of Virginia Episcopal School and the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. He graduated from the University of North Carolina School of Law, with honors in 1955.
Mr Shannonhouse saw active duty in the Korean Conflict as a gunnery officer in the U.S. Navy, Pacific fleet, aboard the USS destroyer Higbee. He later served in the Naval Reserve, attaining the rank of Lieutenant commander.
Mr. Shannon's professional career spanned over 50 years as an attorney and professor of property law. He began his career as assistant professor of public law and government and Assistant Director. Institute of Gov't UNC Chapel Hill from 1955 - 1960. He was assistant professor of law at the University of Georgia School of law from 1960 -1964. He was an adjunct and full professor at the University of Baltimore Law School, where he taught until 1993.
He was a partner and counsel in the law firms of Blumenthal, Wayson, Offut, Klos and Delavan, P.A. in Annapolis, Maryland and Dalnekoff and Mason, also of Annapolis. He retired from general practice in 2009. He was an active member of the Church of the Advent where he served as senior warden for several years.
He is survived by his wife, Myra Welsh Shannonhouse; three sons Royal Graham Shannonhouse IV of Charlotte, N.C. William Welsh Shannonhouse of Fort Worth, Texas, Elliott McCarten Shannonhouse of San Francisco, California, a sister, Susan Shannonhouse Hawkins and husband Dr. Ralph O. and a brother, Rev. Thomas Gordon Shannonhouse of Eastville, Virginia. At the time of his death he also had three grandchildren and numerous nieces and nephews.
The Shannonhouse family wishes to express its heartfelt gratitude to Royal Shannonhouse's many friends, former students and colleagues, who have been so gracious and helpful during this difficult time. A Visitation will be held from 2 to 3 PM on Thursday, July 29, 2010, followed by a memorial service at 3:00 pm at the Church of the Advent Episcopal at 1301 South Charles Street, Baltimore, Maryland 21230.
