On Thursday September 29 2016, Thomas Louis Dixon, best known as Tom, beloved husband, father, grandfather, brother, uncle and friend, passed away peacefully in his sleep with his family by his side.
Tom was born in Decatur Georgia on May 31, 1945 to Mother, Emma Lee Spencer. After attending school in New York City, he joined the US Army as a Lineman beginning in November 1963 as part of the 24th Signal Battalion. In November of 1969, he was honorably discharged as after completion of his service. Later, he became a Staff Sergeant in the Army Reserves. During his service to the Army, Tom received a National Defense Service Medal and Sharpshooter medal.
After the Army, Tom worked briefly for Con Edison before joining the New York City Transit Authority where he would work for the next 25 yrs. In 1984, during a bowling tournament, Thomas, met the love of his life, Judith. The two were soon married. Together, they raised three beautiful children Megan, Marsha and Andrew and are grandparents to Alexander and William. And because one long career just wasn’t enough, after retirement from the New York City Transit Authority, Tom found a second career with the Maryland Transit Authority. Finally, after another 16 years with the MTA, Tom decided to relax and take full advantage of his much overdue retirement. In retirement, Tom made it a point to enjoy more of life.
Tom had many hobbies. He enjoyed traveling, mostly to tropical destinations with his wife. He was a car enthusiast, attending several local car shows. He also enjoyed all things Caribbean: the food, the people, the culture and most of all, playing dominos. He was a ringer and hustled quite a few.
Tom was also an avid sports fan. When his children were growing up he often attended their various sporting events. As far as professional sports, he always supported his New York Teams. Tom was a long suffering Knicks fan, and he spent many many many seasons in tears. As the ultimate final insult, the Redskins beat the Giants just a few days before Tom’s passing.
Thomas was well known for his big smile and infectious laughter. He was a hardworking, humble man and a constant comedian making us laugh even during the saddest of times. He was loved by his colleagues and friends for his straight forward approach to life, respect for others, sense of integrity and unrelenting sense of humor.
